The game pitted the third-ranked Wolverines against the second-ranked Buckeyes, only the second time that the matchup featured programs both ranked in the nation’s top three. The Buckeyes kicked a field goal in the final seconds of regulation to tie the game and force overtime. The game marked the first overtime in the series between the two teams. Ohio State defeated Michigan for the fifth consecutive time, winning 30\u201427 in two overtimes. However, significant controversy emerged over a critical fourth down spot in double overtime. Ohio State quarterback J. Barrett kept the ball on a 4th and 1 play. He was tackled almost exactly on the line to gain, and the ensuing spot gave Barrett a first down.<\/p>\n

Had he not been given the first down, the game would have ended and Michigan would have won.
