Wells coached the Aggies in their inaugural year as members of the Mountain West Conference. Despite multiple injuries to offensive starters, the Aggies were able to gain a berth to the first Mountain West Conference Football Championship Game , which they lost to Fresno State by a score of 17— At the conclusion of the regular season, Matt Wells left to accept the head coaching job at Texas Tech University.
On November 7, , Andersen and Utah State agreed to part ways after starting 0—3 during the season. Defensive coordinator Frank Maile was named the interim head coach of the Utah State Aggies for the remainder of the season.
