The majority of visitors are drawn to the islands by the promise of long sunny days on the beach and countless hours of water sports in the warm tropical waters, but the six major tourist islands of Hawaii have even more to offer visitors.

You can watch big-wave surfing competitions or get out there and catch a wave yourself — lessons and equipment are widely available. Haleakala National Park is one of the top Hawaii points of interest. The dramatic natural beauty of the island has inspired many artists and you can see their work at several galleries as well as at the East Hawaii Cultural Center and the Lyman Mission House Museum in Hilo. There is an endless list of water sports to keep energetic visitors happy and history buffs will find plenty to interest them after a day on the beaches — in downtown Honolulu you can visit the historic Lolani Palace, while at the Pearl Harbor National Historic Landmark you can learn all about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II on a tour of the five historic sites that commemorate this event.
Other adventures unique to Kauai include tubing along the historical water channels of Lihue which were built to irrigate the sugar plantations , zip-lining high above the Kauai rainforests, and off-road 4X4 adventures. You can also go hiking in the Kokee State Park or Waimea Canyon, play a round of golf, or take an aerial tour of the island with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters.
The city contains the state capitol, many historical landmarks, a vibrant arts scene, great shopping and nightlife and, of course, famous Waikiki beach, where surfing was invented.
Lovers of historical architecture can tour the impressive Lolani Palace in downtown Honolulu and take a walking tour through the surrounding streets to visit the Hawaiian State Art Museum and several other historical sites. The garden island of Kauai is simply breathtaking. One of our favorite fun activities to do in Hawaii was a day of kayaking and hiking along the scenic valley of the Wailua River.
Setting off in the dappled morning sunshine, we enjoyed a relaxed paddle along the Wailua River taking in the majestic mountain scenery and enjoying the serenity with little more than the occasional bird call breaking the silence. With an entertaining river guide showing us the way, we learned about many of the traditions and original uses of the land as we trekked our way through the lush rainforest.
The walk itself, while not overly physical, does include a couple of adventurous river crossings and clambering over old trees and down muddy banks to keep things interesting.
We heard the waterfall well before we saw it and then enjoyed a picnic at the very base of the powerful falls. Without taking a kayak to these more secluded places in Hawaii, you would never be able to reach these beautiful spots by road so I highly recommend planning such an adventure on your next visit! Watch turtles from your lanai…just 60 feet from the water. This condo was perfect for myself, husband and daughter. We loved the ocean view from the lanai, the immaculate grounds and pool, and the central location. The condo was very clean and well stocked. November to April is the best time of year for whale spotting in Hawaii although you can still see them earlier or later! In Maui, the Auau channel just south of Lahaina is a particularly fruitful place for whale watching.
We enjoyed a memorable morning tour with Pac Whale Eco Adventures, a not-for-profit organization where all profits go to support the Pacific Whale Foundation through research, education and conservation efforts. We had the most amazing time! The condo was bigger and better than we expected. Unfortunately, the sunrise experience has become so well-known that overcrowding has caused the park to institute a reservation system for anyone who wishes to arrive for a sunrise viewing!
